How to Compare Air Speed, Airflow and Static Pressure

These metrics answer different questions. Record the exact model, mode, fixture, distance, instrument, environmental conditions and calculation method before comparing results.

Framework—not a test reportReviewed 2026-10-30
Direct answer

Use air speed for local velocity at a defined point, airflow for total volume through a defined area and static pressure for operation against restriction. Never convert one headline value into another without a documented method and geometry.

Minimum setup record

  • Model, version, motor, impeller, battery or power source, firmware and accessories.
  • Operating mode, state of charge, warm-up or stabilization time and ambient conditions.
  • Fixture, outlet geometry, measurement distance, axis and instrument identity.
  • Calibration status, sampling period, repeated readings and treatment of variation.

Which metric should be used?

MetricUse it forRequired context
Air speedVelocity at a defined point or working distanceDistance, axis, sensing area, mode and instrument
AirflowTotal volume crossing a known areaFixture, cross-section, velocity distribution and calculation
Static pressureAbility to work against restrictionPressure fixture, operating point, leakage control and unit

Procedure

  1. Lock the approved sample and configuration record.
  2. Mount the unit without blocking the intake or changing the outlet.
  3. Mark all measurement positions before testing.
  4. Stabilize the selected mode, then capture repeated readings.
  5. Report the full set or declared averaging rule, not only a transient maximum.
  6. Photograph the setup and record exceptions.

Acceptance boundary

A result applies only to the tested configuration and method. A motor, impeller, battery, outlet, firmware or fixture change may require retesting.

Put the method into the sample approval plan

Agree on the metric, setup and acceptance rule before requesting a performance claim.
