How to Compare Turbo Fan Noise

A sound value is meaningful only with its distance, orientation, room, background level, operating mode, instrument and configuration. Tonal character and vibration may also matter even when two headline values are similar.

Direct answer

Measure the same sample positions in the same environment after recording background noise. Report each operating mode separately and keep the microphone distance, height, orientation, weighting and time response unchanged.

Required test record

FieldRecord
SampleModel, version, motor, impeller, battery, housing and accessories
EnvironmentRoom, reflective surfaces, ambient condition and background level
PositionMicrophone distance, height, axis and fan orientation
InstrumentMeter, calibration status, weighting and time response
OperationMode, state of charge, stabilization time and test duration
ResultRepeated readings, variation, observations and acceptance rule

Procedure

  1. Record the background level with the fan off.
  2. Mount or hold the sample in the agreed use orientation.
  3. Keep the meter position fixed and clear of the operator.
  4. Measure every declared mode after stabilization.
  5. Note rattles, tonal peaks, pulsing or vibration separately from the level.
  6. Repeat the run and retain raw readings.

Common comparison errors

  • Comparing values measured at different distances.
  • Ignoring room reflections or a high background level.
  • Mixing low-speed and maximum-speed claims.
  • Reporting only the lowest transient reading.
  • Applying one sample result to a changed motor, impeller or housing.
A website label such as quiet or low noise is not a test result. Ask for the model, method, conditions and accepted limit.
